Philip Vermeulen: chasing the dot

From now until January 5, 2025, Rijksmuseum Twenthe presents the very first museum solo exhibition of the emerging artist Philip Vermeulen.

Discover six of his intriguing works, each in its own room, and be surprised by two brand new works developed especially for this exhibition. In his works, Philip Vermeulen explores the foundations of human perception through movement, light, vibration and sound. His room-filling installations, which he himself calls "hypersculptures," transform before the viewer's eyes, creating a unique, mesmerizing experience. What does light do to our brains? How do we register movement? How does sound feel? And do we actually see what we think we see?

A good example is the immersive installation Chasing The Dot, in which the visitor is immersed in different shades of light and suddenly sees a large, dark dot in the field of vision. A dot that is not there in reality, but appears as an afterimage on the retina. Vermeulen's work revolves around the pursuit of such elusive phenomena and the questions these phenomena raise. Can we really trust our senses? What is reality, and is it the same for everyone? The exhibition Philip Vermeulen. Chasing The Dot is a dreamy trip for both young and old. Other works in the exhibition include Pulse, Ocular Drift and Fanfanfan.

About Philip Vermeulen

Philip Vermeulen graduated summa cum laude from the ArtScience Interfaculty of the Royal Academy of Art (KABK) in The Hague in 2017. His oeuvre is imbued with a playful and inquisitive urge to experiment, exploring physical phenomena such as light and sound. Since graduating, Vermeulen has achieved international success, with exhibitions and performances in leading museums, festivals and clubs - from Schevening to Rio de Janeiro. In 2020, he was nominated for the Volkskrant Visual Arts Prize and his installation More Moiré2 was nominated for a Golden Calf in the Best Interactive category.
