A city park in Enschede-North, named after the textile manufacturer G.J. van Heek.

The architect of the park is Pieter Wattez, son of Dirk Wattez, the designer of the Volkspark. The Van Heekpark has an open character, offering plenty of space for sports and recreation. The greenery consists mainly of oak trees and rhododendrons. Within the park, there is a tennis complex and a clubhouse dating back to the 1920s. Additionally, you can find an obelisk-shaped art installation. In the villa on Roessinghsbleekweg, you’ll find Schenkerij Wattez, where clients and caregivers from Avelijn are happy to serve you coffee, tea, or soft drinks.

The smaller Van Lochemsbleekpark has a more intimate character, featuring narrow pathways, a pond, hedges, and more diverse planting. Next to the pond stands a monument by artist Albert Termote, dedicated to the Flemish refugees who fled during World War I. This monument was a gift from the city of Antwerp. In the forecourt on Hengelosestraat and near the petting zoo at the back, there are two artworks by the Enschede-based artist Saskia van den Eerde.

Dogs must be kept on a leash in the park.

Open from sunrise to sunset.

Van Heekpark 100 Years

In 2018, it was 100 years since the heirs of G.J. van Heek donated the park to the residents of Enschede. According to the deed of donation, the park was specifically intended for relaxation, play, and sports. A century ago, it was located on the outskirts of Enschede; today, it lies almost in the heart of the city. Over the past 100 years, hundreds of thousands of people have enjoyed this park. Sportclub Enschede, a longtime user of the facilities, even became the national champion here. In 1947, the first Marathon of Enschede started from this park.

Today, the main users include the Topspinners tennis club, the EKC Naas korfball club, the Enschede Jeu de Boules association, the Christian Youth Organization, Wattez with operator Aveleijn, and the Société des Gourmets Eurégional.
