The estate is open and its location makes it a popular base for hiking for local residents. Two of the three farms and a tea dome on the estate are national monuments; the tea dome was recently restored with the help of a grant.
De Helmer has been a well-known estate in Enschede since 1305. During World War II, the German occupiers started building a runway on De Helmer for the launch of unmanned jet aircraft, a V1 launch pad. However, it remained only a foundation; it still lies in the woods of the estate.
