Roombeek walking route
Over 20 years ago, the Roombeek neighborhood was devastated by the Fireworks Disaster. This disaster had a great impact on the residents and the city. Today, the neighborhood is the epitome of creativity and resilience. Walk through Roombeek and experience it.
The Roombeek district is located just north of the center of Enschede. It is a contemporary district that has everything to offer: living, working, shopping and culture in a dynamic and inspiring environment. With the large number of cultural institutions, Roombeek is a cultural hotspot within Enschede. In the shopping center 'Op de Brouwerij' and along the Roomweg you will find a varied range of stores. For a drink or a delicious lunch you can visit several catering establishments.
Starting point
Rijksmuseum Twenthe, Lasondersingel
The route begins at the Rijksmuseum Twenthe. The Rijksmuseum Twenthe has the richest and most beautiful art collection in the eastern Netherlands. Each exhibition tells you something about culture in the present or past. Up to 10 exhibitions are programmed annually. In the museum café and adjacent courtyard garden you can enjoy a nice cup of coffee.

Roombeek Culture Park
Combine a walk through the neighborhood with a visit to several cultural institutions that are abundant here. De Museumfabriek is both a museum and a factory. A museum because the most beautiful exhibitions are made with amazing collections and a factory because you get to work there yourself. It is a museum where you can be creative yourself.
Tetem is one of the few presentation places in the Netherlands where media art plays a leading role in its programming. However, Tetem operates in the much broader field of digital media, technology, science and design. You can visit exhibitions there, but also follow workshops and interesting events are regularly organized.
Rijksmuseum Twenthe is the museum of the imagination. The art in the museum confronts the present with the past.

Monument
Lasonderbleek is the memorial park. The affected spot is visible through the old concrete foundation of the fireworks factory. 'The lost house between heaven and earth' by Amsterdam artist Balta shows a drawing of a house in the grass. A house like a child draws, recognizable to everyone.
The dotted lines next to the house refer to possible remnants of a vanished part. A memorial stone near the monument shows all the names of the victims of the disaster.
End point
Stadshaard (City Fireplace)
The cogeneration plant that provides Roombeek with heat and hot tap water. The Delft blue facade was designed by Hugo Kaagman. The tiles all depict things that have something to do with electricity or Enschede's past.
